Hands Inside Clubhead

Keep your hands inside the clubhead on the backswing.

This is a good thought for players who open their clubface during the first three feet of the swing. When this happens, the club gets behind them at the top, and from that position it is very difficult to square it at impact. There must be a compensation made coming down.

If you think "hands inside, clubhead outside," this will keep your clubface square at waist level, and will also help put you in the proper position at the top of the swing. It will certainly prevent the clockwise, rolling-open action of your forearms and club.

An image to help you achieve "hands inside, clubhead outside" is to feel as though the butt end of the club travels directly past your right thigh. There will still a gap between your thigh and the club, but the butt end will momentarily point at your right thigh. This will keep everything "one-piece," as well as keep your clubface square.

If you look at the great ball strikers in the game today, you can see how clearly they do this. Nick Faldo and Nick Price are very noticeable with this move, and reach waist level in practically the same fashion.

Another image you can use to achieve this is to think of the first few feet of the swing as two circles. One circle would be on the outside where the ball and clubhead are, and the other on the inside where your hands are. Swing the clubhead on the outer circle, and your hands on the inner circle.
